English is the one code every declared set contains

All nine vendors that declare a site language declare English. It is also the only code written bare in the otherwise fully tagged 27-locale set, and the only alternate left on the host at both companies serving everything else from subdomains. As of 2026-09-22.

1Unanimity, and what it is worth

A language every vendor declares carries no information for choosing between them. Its value here is as a control: it shows the declarations are real, since a set that omitted English while claiming others would be evidence of broken markup rather than of a market.

It is also the baseline the other twenty-eight languages are measured against. Every other code in this register is a decision a company made on top of a page it already had.

2The one bare code in a fully tagged set

One vendor writes every alternate as a language-region pair except this one. Leaving English untagged while naming a country for Czech, Greek and Romanian is a deliberate asymmetry: English is being offered to everybody rather than to one market.

Nobody in this register declares a regional English. No en-GB, no en-US, no en-AU appears anywhere in the counted sets, which makes English the one widely spoken language here with no published variant information at all.

3The last code standing when the rule bites

At the two vendors that serve their alternates from language subdomains, the single alternate remaining on the host being read is the English one. That is why both of those rows read one rather than zero.

It also means those two counted figures carry no information beyond the existence of the site. Both rows are printed with their raw declarations beside them for exactly that reason.
