Japanese is declared eight times and checked twice

Eight of the nine vendors that declare a site language declare Japanese. It is also the only language in this register where two separate vendor pages were opened, and both turned out to be genuinely written in it. As of 2026-09-22.

Inclusion rule. Vendors declaring this language as a same-host hreflang alternate. A vendor serving the language without declaring it cannot be seen by this method and is not listed. Order. Alphabetical by vendor.

1Two spot checks, on two different kinds of page

A declaration is markup. It can point at a redirect, a stale page or an English page with a switcher on it, and the count would look the same. So two of these eight declarations were opened.

One was a price page, written in Japanese throughout including the plan names and the per-feature cost list. The other was a landing page whose navigation and headings were in Japanese and which declared itself as Japanese. Two checks, two real translations, recorded as exactly that.

2Why this language rather than another

Japanese is the best language in this column for testing the method. It is declared by almost everyone, so there were pages to choose from, and a machine-swapped Japanese page is easy for a reader to recognise as one.

The checks are not extended across the register because a spot check done for some vendors and not others stops being a uniform measurement. The count is the comparable figure; these two openings are a test of whether the count means anything.

3Declared almost everywhere, and absent from one set

The only declared set here without Japanese is the shortest one, which contains German and English and nothing else. Every set of five codes or more includes it, which is not true of any language except English and German.

One vendor declares ja-JP and the other seven the bare code. The language has one national standard, so unlike Portuguese or Spanish the bare code costs a reader almost nothing here.
