Spot check: opening one page to test what a count means

A spot check is opening one declared address and reading the page behind it. It tests whether a count means anything, and its result applies to the one page checked and to nothing else. As of 2026-09-22.

Inclusion rule. Claims a single spot check supports, paired with claims it is often read as supporting. Both concern one page. Order. The supported claim first.

1It exists because a count cannot see a swap

A declaration pointing at an automatically translated page counts exactly the same as one pointing at a page a translator worked on. So a column of counts needs at least one test of whether the counts correspond to anything.

Two checks appear in this register, on two vendors and two kinds of page. Both turned out to be real translations, which is thin evidence and better than an assumption in either direction.

2Why it is not done for every vendor

A check performed for some vendors and not others stops being a uniform measurement and starts being an editorial judgement about who deserved scrutiny. The count is the comparable figure; the check is a test of the method.

Doing it for all of them would mean reading a page in nine languages per vendor, most of which nobody here reads well enough to judge. A claim of having checked would be worse than an honest gap.

3What it is recorded as

One line, naming the address, the language and what the page turned out to be. It is printed on the vendor entry rather than folded into the count, so nobody can mistake a checked vendor for a better one.

It also does not change the number. A vendor whose spot check failed would keep its count and gain a line saying what was found, because the count measures declarations and the check measures something else.
